A Dutch crowdfunded news site has raised $1.3 million and hopes for a digital-native journalism » Nieman Journalism Lab

The Like-minded are benefiting from Crowdfunding

Rob Wijnberg thought his chances were 50/50. Getting 15,000 people to pledge €60 for a one-year susbscription to an news site that didn’t yet exist was never a given.

On March 18, Wijnberg, former editor-in-chief of the young-adult-targeted newspaper nrc.next, proposed his idea for a new online journalism platform on Dutch national television. Within 24 hours, his team had raised half its goal, and after eight days, Wijnberg got an earlier than expected go-ahead: 15,000 had subscribed, and many had added donations on top of their subscription fee. In just over a week, in a small country, the Dutch crowdfunding project De Correspondent had raised over €1 million (about $1.3 million).

Crowd Funding Black Restoration

“As Black spending becomes more group-centered  … The need will arise for more Black restaurants, real estate agents, contractors … As our sisters transition from weaves and perms a need arises for more natural hair care products and services. As our parents become more enlightened about the miss education of their children … a need arises for more Black centered textbooks, learning curriculum … As our taste for music, movies … become more conscious … a need arises for more conscious and pride based artist, filmmakers, and distributors … all to sustain and maintain a Restoration Movement. “

By Jay Jones  (@jayjonesini), The Black Restoration Society

The Black Restoration Society is a progressive organization founded for the sole purpose of restoring the Pride, Health and Wealth of Blacks in America and beyond. One of the fundamental foundations of the Restoration movement is the implementation of race based group economics. The idea of Black people creating and controlling the products and services we consume is not only a positive one but a very necessary one if we, as a people, intend to compete and remain competitive in an ever changing global and economic landscape.

Slavery was an incredibly dark, inhumane, physically and mentally devastating chapter in human history. Black people have endured centuries of brutal attacks that have damaged our love for ourselves, our love for each other, and as a result our lack of love and trust in each other.  It has compromised our ability to engage in group economics; which is essential to Black Restoration. In order to change this current reality we must first restore the Pride and Trust in ourselves and each other. In order for this to be accomplished new black businesses need to be created that support the new Black Restoration consciousness; thereby forming a new Black economic movement.

Black Americans represent a vast amount of economic buying power; specifically, an estimated $1.1 Trillion by 2015. However, the sad fact is that money circulates 0 to 1 time within the Black Community before leaving it and empowering other communities to take over ours! We are essentially financing our very own extinction! This is a serious problem we face as a people, BUT solving problems is the essence of entrepreneurial endeavors.

Dominating the Economy of Our Existence

Wherever and whatever Black people spend money on a Black entrepreneur has an opportunity to compete for their business, in theory. The reality is that major corporations also recognize the vast amount of money Black consumers represent so they spend huge amounts of money marketing and manipulating the minds of Black consumer’s everyday.

If Black entrepreneurs recognize and react to the burgeoning niche’ markets being created by the Restoration of Pride in Black America they could undermine the big corporations and reap the riches that have historical been stolen by other cultures and used against us. We have allowed Asians to come in and dominate our hair care and seafood industry, Indians to come in and dominate our community convenience store and gas station industry and the European culture to come in and dominate our Black History Industry!  When we restore the ownership of these industries back to their rightful owners it will provide a huge financial and pride infusion back into our beaten and broken Black people and remind us how powerful a Black Fist of solidarity is in restoring the pride, health and wealth of our people.

Building The Infrastructure of Self-Sufficiency

As our sisters transition from weaves and perms a need arises for more natural hair care products and services. As our parents become more enlightened about the miss education of their children and decide to home school a need arises for more Black centered textbooks, learning curriculum, and online educational sites and instructors. As our taste for music, movies, and other forms of entertainment become more conscious and pride based, a need arises for more conscious and pride based artist, filmmakers, and distributors to facilitate the demand. As our fashion tastes begin to change from the worship of European designers to a more conscious and culturally relevant one, a need arises for more Black designers to express their own brilliant voices and choices. As Black Americans become more sophisticated socially and begin to understand the difference between a politician and a true leader, a need will arise for more relevant leaders of the people with a Restoration agenda and a viable plan to bring that agenda into reality. As Black spending becomes more group-centered and our respect and love for each other is restored, we will stop running away from each other and start running toward each other.  The need will arise for more Black restaurants, real estate agents, contractors, doctors, dentist, teachers, writers, schools, hospitals, grocery stores, mechanics, electricians, engineers, fitness trainers and anything you can think of to sustain and maintain a Restoration Movement.

The time is now for us to use our God given gifts to make way for our children and their children! We no longer have the luxury to squander our resources or allow them to be stolen from us! We can build our pride and economic strength as a people simultaneously and seamlessly if we design, develop, and do the things necessary to restore the Pride, Health and Wealth of Black people in America and beyond!

New York – 14 February 2018 – CulturalGrassroots.com, a crowd funding portal created for “Black folks that recognize power in the ability to ascribe value to our goods, services and ideas”, has financed what is being heralded as the next great Epic Fantasy Novel that recreates the spiritual journey of Africans in the modern world, incorporating African folktales, myths, legends and science fiction, to project a worldview never before seen in modern culture.

The project’s author, 38 year old writer and story teller who goes by the singular name, “Duma”, worked on the project for over 10 years, spending the last five years trying to get published. “There is no market for such a comprehensive Black narrative”, is what Duma heard over and over from the world’s leading publishing houses.

“I was completely defeated; I had heard “no” too many times and I had put the manuscript down, ready to give up when I heard about CulturalGrassroots.com. They saved my life.”  CulturalGrassroots.com, with its database of over 50,000 Black people, took an interest in the project and invited Duma to post the project on the site. The intial proposal asked for $25,000 that would allow the author to finish writing and to print a small run of special edition books.

The proposal received over 10,000 pledges of support, ranging from $1.00 to $35.00, and raised $73,000, far exceeding the original goal. “I was completely blown away by the response from our members,” said Marlin Adams, the site’s promoter. “The response was so positive and the money was coming in so fast the author asked me to help him actually publish and sell the book through the CG.com network. The novel is an exciting journey through time and space that explores the meaning of experience, and the true nature of life from a Black perspective. “What a breath of literary fresh, innovative air,” says Adams.
